Methodology

How these numbers are counted.

CarrierOk ingests FMCSA register actions throughout the day, triggered as they publish. Each figure counts distinct dockets with a grant, revocation, or reinstatement action on a given day, summed by calendar month — so a docket revoked and reinstated in the same month appears once in each column.

Register actions publish with a lag: the trailing two months are marked provisional, appear in the table but not the chart, and fill in over subsequent updates. Snapshot last generated 2026-07-09.

Authority grants & revocations — FAQ

In April 2026, FMCSA revoked operating authority on 7,629 dockets, while granting 6,073 new authorities and reinstating 2,256. Over the trailing 12 complete months, 62,999 authorities were granted and 92,332 were revoked.
A revocation is FMCSA withdrawing a carrier's or broker's operating authority (its MC/FF docket), most commonly for lapsed insurance (BIPD or bond), failure to maintain a process agent (BOC-3), or as a sanction. A revoked carrier cannot legally operate for-hire in interstate commerce until the authority is reinstated.
FMCSA register actions publish with a lag, so the most recent months are provisional and fill in over subsequent updates. We mark the trailing two months as provisional in the table and exclude them from the chart until they stabilize.
Grants minus revocations is the cleanest month-over-month signal of for-hire capacity change. In April 2026 the net was negative (-1,556 dockets). For fleet-level capacity — trucks observed on the road — see the monthly capacity reports on the market data hub.
CarrierOk ingests FMCSA register actions (the same source as the FMCSA Register) into its data warehouse the moment updates publish and counts distinct dockets acted on per day, summed by calendar month. The same pipeline powers authority-change alerts in CarrierOk monitoring.
