Insurance & Underwriting

9.9/10 on G2 · High Performer5.0 on the Chrome Web Store

Price trucking risk on data your competitors don’t have.

Underwrite the whole book: find the carriers worth quoting, price them on data most underwriters never see, and know the day a risk you already wrote changes. All 7 BASICs computed in-house, including the two FMCSA does not publish.

Every unit we have seen on the road in the last 24 months, VIN by VIN — reconcile it against the schedule on the policy.

The short answer

Underwriting a motor carrier turns on data the public file withholds. CarrierOk computes all 7 BASIC percentiles, including Crash Indicator and Hazardous Materials, returns the ISS score with FMCSA's recommendation band, and carries insurance as the insurer filed it, for any FMCSA registrant.

The two withheld BASICs
FMCSA's public SMS site publishes five of seven percentiles. CarrierOk computes all seven from the underlying measure and violation data, so a submission is priced on the full set.
Insurance history
Every filing with its insurer, limit, effective date and how it ended, so a gap between a cancellation and the next policy is visible rather than inferred.
Finding the business
The directory filters the whole registry by authority, equipment, fleet size and insurance renewal timing, so the same subscription sources submissions as well as rating them.
After you bind
Monitoring reports authority, insurance and safety changes on a written risk the same day they are published.
Explaining a decline
Each risk signal is its own named field traceable to the filing behind it, so a decision can be documented rather than asserted.

Find it, price it, then watch it.

Most teams arrive looking for one of these and stay for the other two, because the same record answers all three.

Find the book worth quoting

Search every FMCSA registrant by fleet size, equipment, operating radius, authority age and safety profile — then export the carriers that fit your appetite, with contact names and phone numbers. Agencies use this as a lead source, not just a lookup.

Every policy on the monitoring list. A same-day alert when authority changes, insurance lapses, or a new BASIC goes into alert — so a mid-term deterioration reaches you before the renewal does.

Manual carrier research spans four or five systems, and still misses signals.

The typical workflow pulls FMCSA SAFER, checks QCMobile or CAB, verifies insurance on a separate system, looks up fleet data on NHTSA, then assembles the picture by hand. Every submission is reassembled from scratch, and nothing about it is standardised enough to put in the file.

And it still does not surface chameleon carriers, shared-identifier anomalies, or the gap between the fleet a carrier files and the fleet actually on the road.

01

Pull profile

Search by DOT or MC number and the whole picture arrives in one call: operating status, all 7 BASICs, ISS, policy-level insurance, observed fleet and risk signals.

02

See the risk

Every signal is labelled, scored and explained, and the reliability signals are shown alongside them. No manual interpretation, and a standardised output for the file.

Export a PDF or push the data into your quoting system through the API. Set monitoring for the renewal, and you will know if anything moves before it does.

FMCSA publishes five of the seven BASIC percentiles and withholds Crash Indicator and Hazmat Compliance from public view. CarrierOk computes all seven from the underlying measure and violation data, following FMCSA’s own methodology and peer grouping, so a submission is assessed on the full set rather than the public subset.

FMCSA only assigns a percentile where a carrier has enough inspection history to support one, so no source has all seven for every carrier. Where the data supports a percentile, CarrierOk computes it.

Every data point you need for underwriting.

CarrierOk computes every score in-house from the raw FMCSA data rather than passing a published number through. The two cards marked Enhanced have no equivalent in FMCSA's own API.

Fleet reported vs observed

Enhanced

Power units filed on the MCS-150 against VINs actually seen in roadside inspections, with the variance flagged when observed materially exceeds reported. VIN-level, with last-seen dates.

Identity network & risk signals

Enhanced

50+ signals including phone, address, email, EIN and DUNS numbers shared with other DOT numbers — the chameleon pattern, which is invisible on any single carrier record.

All 7 BASICs with history

Unsafe Driving, HOS, Driver Fitness, Controlled Substances, Vehicle Maintenance, Hazmat and Crash Indicator, with 12-month trend. The last two are computed in-house because FMCSA does not publish them.

ISS score

The Inspection Selection System score computed with FMCSA's published ISS-CSA algorithm. At 75 and above, FMCSA's recommendation becomes INSPECT — the line underwriters commonly screen against. Updated throughout the day.

Policy-level insurance

BIPD, cargo and bond coverage with insurer name, coverage amounts, effective and cancellation dates, and every prior filing — FMCSA publishes no expiry date, so the history is what tells you whether coverage has lapsed before.

Same-day monitoring

Monitor any carrier you have written. Same-day alerts for authority changes, insurance lapses, or new risk signal activity.

Switching from CAB?

CarrierOk vs. CAB

CAB leads on loss history and publishes BASIC percentiles. CarrierOk adds fleet variance, identity-network signals and same-day monitoring. Many underwriters use both — see how they compare.

Insurance & Underwriting FAQ

CarrierOk is a carrier intelligence platform used to source, price and monitor trucking risk. It consolidates the FMCSA record on any motor carrier or broker and adds the scoring FMCSA does not publish: all 7 BASIC percentiles, a computed ISS score, 50+ named risk signals, and policy-level insurance history, with monitoring that reports changes the same day. The same record is delivered however you consume it: a REST API, the web app, a Chrome extension, or bulk files. Underwriters and MGAs use it for the inputs a submission does not carry: computed percentiles, the ISS score, and the insurance filing history behind the certificate.
CAB is strong on loss history and publishes BASIC percentiles, so the overlap is real. What CarrierOk adds is the fleet check — power units filed on the MCS-150 against VINs actually observed in roadside inspections, with the variance flagged when observed materially exceeds reported — plus the identity-network signals that expose a carrier operating under a fresh DOT number. Many underwriters run both.
FMCSA publishes five of the seven BASIC percentiles publicly; Crash Indicator and Hazmat Compliance are withheld. CarrierOk computes all seven in-house from the underlying measure and violation data, so a submission is assessed on the full set rather than the public subset.
Add any carrier you have written to the monitoring list. CarrierOk logs a same-day alert on an authority change, an insurance policy lapse, a new BASIC alert, or a new risk signal. Alerts land in your Monitoring feed, or programmatically by polling the monitoring endpoints for what changed.
Yes. The REST API returns all carrier data fields in one call, and carriers and MGAs commonly pull risk data straight into the quoting workflow. It is pay-as-you-go through the developer portal: free sandbox with signup: fixture data from 10 carriers, no card required, then $50 activation, applied as $50 of API credit.
It covers the FMCSA compliance and risk data those tools provide, plus monitoring, risk scoring, the Directory and API access in one subscription. See the Carrier Software comparison for a full breakdown.
